    Promoting sex and gender inclusivity in the classroom: A re-evaluation of discipline norms.

    Creating curricula that are inclusive of sex and gender diverse students starts with redefining the classroom environment and how course materials are discussed. Such inclusive environments help increase diversity and representation in STEM. However, traditional approaches to teaching and the use of gendered language can reinforce unsupported notions regarding sex and gender. These notions persist throughout STEM and only serve to alienate our sex and gender diverse students and impact their safety. Thus, we have been exploring how best to approach the topics of sex and gender. Our context is in Biology, as our courses can explore the complexity of biological sex, why it is different from gender, and thus why transgender and non-binary individuals are part of natural variation instead of outliers. However, gendered language and misconceptions can appear in any discipline, in the terminology, metaphors, and examples given in class. In addition, all disciplines must consider how best to foster inclusivity among their students. In this presentation, we invite participants to share experiences and concerns regarding inclusivity in their classes, discuss case studies, and brainstorm with each other on how best to incorporate sex and gender awareness in their disciplines. Participants will come away with an appreciation for why sex and gender inclusivity is important, a framework for applying sex and gender inclusivity to their own curricula, a desire to learn more, and resources to help them on their journey

    Accurately forecasting the price of oil, the world's most actively traded commodity, is of great importance to both academics and practitioners. We contribute by proposing a functional time series based method to model and forecast oil futures. Our approach boasts a number of theoretical and practical advantages including effectively exploiting underlying process dynamics missed by classical discrete approaches. We evaluate the finite-sample performance against established benchmarks using a model confidence set test. A realistic out-of-sample exercise provides strong support for the adoption of our approach with it residing in the superior set of models in all considered instances.Comment: 28 pages, 4 figures, to appear in European Financial Managemen

    Competition for resources is one of the most important selective factors influencing the expression of life history traits in both plants and animals (Darwin 1859). In grasslands, competition for resources such as nutrients, water, and space often is constrained by stochastic processes (Axelrod 1985). Disturbance factors such as fire, grazing by large herbivores, and fluctuating climatic conditions tend to alter the structure and magnitude of competition for limited resources among grassland communities more frequently than in other ecosystems (Snaydon 1987, van der Maarel 1993). Vertebrate carrion is one important resource used by both plants and animals in grasslands, providing a rich but ephemeral point source of nutrients (Towne 2000, Barton et al. 2013). A complex ecological network of vertebrate and invertebrate necrophilous animal species compete intensely for these carrion resources, often aided by specialized sensory and motility adaptations that aid resource discovery and sequestration (Putman 1978, Scott et al. 1979, DeVault et al. 2003)

    Measurement of the Λ0b→ J/ψΛ angular distribution and the Λ0b polarisation in pp collisions

    This paper presents an analysis of the Λ0b→ J/ψΛ angular distribution and the transverse production polarisation of Λ0b baryons in proton-proton collisions at centre-of-mass energies of 7, 8 and 13 TeV. The measurements are performed using data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 4.9 fb−1, collected with the LHCb experiment. The polarisation is determined in a fiducial region of Λ0b transverse momentum and pseudorapidity of 1 < pT< 20 GeV/c and 2 < η < 5, respectively. The data are consistent with Λ0b baryons being produced unpolarised in this region. The parity-violating asymmetry parameter of the Λ → pπ− decay is also determined from the data and its value is found to be consistent with a recent measurement by the BES III collaboration

    Bose-Einstein correlations of same-sign charged pions in the forward region in pp collisions at √s=7 TeV

    Bose-Einstein correlations of same-sign charged pions, produced in protonproton collisions at a 7 TeV centre-of-mass energy, are studied using a data sample collected by the LHCb experiment. The signature for Bose-Einstein correlations is observed in the form of an enhancement of pairs of like-sign charged pions with small four-momentum difference squared. The charged-particle multiplicity dependence of the Bose-Einstein correlation parameters describing the correlation strength and the size of the emitting source is investigated, determining both the correlation radius and the chaoticity parameter. The measured correlation radius is found to increase as a function of increasing charged-particle multiplicity, while the chaoticity parameter is seen to decreas

    Observation of an Excited Bc+ State

    Using pp collision data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 8.5 fb-1 recorded by the LHCb experiment at center-of-mass energies of s=7, 8, and 13 TeV, the observation of an excited Bc+ state in the Bc+π+π- invariant-mass spectrum is reported. The observed peak has a mass of 6841.2±0.6(stat)±0.1(syst)±0.8(Bc+) MeV/c2, where the last uncertainty is due to the limited knowledge of the Bc+ mass. It is consistent with expectations of the Bc∗(2S31)+ state reconstructed without the low-energy photon from the Bc∗(1S31)+→Bc+γ decay following Bc∗(2S31)+→Bc∗(1S31)+π+π-. A second state is seen with a global (local) statistical significance of 2.2σ (3.2σ) and a mass of 6872.1±1.3(stat)±0.1(syst)±0.8(Bc+) MeV/c2, and is consistent with the Bc(2S10)+ state.
